In Defense Of Politically InCorrect Callings

Sunday, July 29th, 2007 (etc with 4 Comments)

Dedicated to those of like mind facing the ridicule from their own.

“Why would you ever want to do THAT?!” “You want to do what?!” “Are you sure?”

These are some of the responses Christians get from other believers when they say that God is calling them into law or politics. Many Christians don’t see these places “fit” for a Christian to be involved in. “It’s corrupt, why would you want to be involved in politics?”or “Lawyers are slimy and evil, why would you want to be one of them?” For the Christians called into these arenas, the answer is in the question. The only way to make politics less corrupt is to infiltrate with a biblical worldview. The only way to infiltrate is to be involved. There are slimy people in law, which is why the only way to cleanse it of the slime is to get Christians in there to bring justice back into the law. The only way to affect change is to get involved in the process.

We don’t ridicule people for becoming missionaries or pastors – and those are indeed worthy callings. However, we see fit to give the culture missionaries a hard time because we don’t see that job as “God honoring” or “holy”. What we seem to forget is that every occupation is a mission field for a Christian. Politics and law are two mission places that really need more missionaries involved in.
Some people say that we shouldn’t be involved in law or politics because “the system can’t be fixed”, “it’s for animals”, or “God wouldn’t call anyone there”. What they’re forgetting is that law and government are God-ordained and have been around since the beginning of civilization. You can not have one without the other.

Ever since the beginning there has always been some form of government established and laws that coincide with it. The family, the Church, Theocracies, Republics, Totalitarians are all different forms of Government. Does this mean God ordained communism? Certainly not, the Biblical role of Government is clearly outlined throughout the bible (you can also see it here). Along with government there has always been law or rules to coincide.

In fact, not only did God create and establish government, but He created and established law too!
In the garden, God gave Adam a command – Take the earth and subdue it, be fruitful and multiply, you have dominion over all the animals. The government was a theocracy, and God made the law. Later on, God gave more laws or commandments. All throughout history laws and governments have been created. God doesn’t want anarchy, neither does He want the evil in power. Proverbs 29:2 points out: When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

How can we as Christians look at two very important and inseparable aspects of civilization and deem it “not of Christ” in an attempt to deter people from what God has called them to do?

So many people see those in law as inhuman, always taking advantage of others and only looking out for themselves. While it is often true that some lawyers are only in it for the money, that is not always the case. Simply look at Jay Sekulow and the ACLJ or HSLDA. They are great advocates for justice, serving America. They are preserving God’s law and the American Constitution, not promoting an anti-God agenda. We are outnumbered, and that is why we need more people in this area with a biblical worldview.

We are called to be a light penetrating darkness, not a light trying to outshine all the other lights. We can’t penetrate darkness if we aren’t going and doing what God is calling us to, and we’re limiting the amount of light that could be spread when we don’t support those who are trying to do what God has called them to do. The Christians involved in law and politics are facing enough pressure from the world , do we as brothers and sisters in the faith really need to make following God’s call on their lives more difficult because we haven’t deemed this occupation “of God”?
It’s not a matter of do we like that fellow believers are going in to this arena, it’s a matter of are we doing what God has called us to do and encouraging our brothers and sisters in Christ to do the same and continue following Him?

On Relationships…

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007 (Culture, etc with 3 Comments)

In a day where relationships don’t last, or any friendship with the other gender typically makes people think you’re “together”, it’s hard to maintain a pure relationship. With the peer pressure and “just do it” attitude of the American culture, we see people “hooking up” for all the wrong reasons. Often times the attraction between two people is largely physical over establishing a friendship and then seeking God on whether or not anything deeper is His will.

The interesting aspect of this is that the way you handle all of your relationships whether it be family, friends, or romance all boils down to your worldview.

A prominent ill in America is the high divorce rate. This is all due to an incorrect view of God. Instead of trying to serve the other person, your goal is to serve your own desires. The process before marriage becomes focused on fulfilling physical and emotional desires to please “self”.

This is where our view of God comes into play.

When all we’re trying to do is fulfill our own desires we are making ourselves the first priority and simply using the other person. The “love” that is then being felt is not a genuine love and concern for the other person and their wellbeing, but rather the feeling of a desire being temporarily filled. In a sense, we have taken God’s place as priority and ultimate authority.

On the other hand, if we have an accurate view of God, our focus will be on His will and not our personal desires. As a result, we will aim to keep ourselves and the other person from anything that could hurt or damage the purity in the relationship.

If a couple decides to get married and had an inaccurate view of God – or the “it’s all about me” worldview – when a hard time comes or the feelings go away, they will most likely end up in divorce.

If the couple who put God first in their relationship gets married than they will be able to go through the hard times and come out victoriously.

By putting God first in their relationship they gained a true relationship with each other – as friends and brothers and sisters in Christ. As a result, because they placed God first they became a “cord of three strands” that is not easily broken. Because of this, anything can come at them and they will be able to finish stronger and be closer together than before.

As we can see the results of the two relationships are as different as the worldviews each had.

However, the effect that our worldview has on our life does not stop at relationships. Our worldview determines every other aspect of life: what we say, how we act, what we think, who we interact with – it all goes back to how we view God.

If He is first in our life the rest of our actions and thoughts will inevitably follow, if we place ourselves first then we will become self serving. The question that remains is this:Will we keep our “it’s all about me” mentality? Or will we change and make God our priority?

A Series of Updates

KP and Chay

For those of you wondering about the personal life of this blogger and her family, you’re in luck.

It’s been a long two weeks, but Jonathan Chay finally came home a day and a half before my brother and I returned from GenJ camp. Chay is doing very well and has had no medical problems at all and mom is recovering from her C-Section incredibly well.

There were a few difficulties in getting out of the hospital, but after they started needing room and a threat to AMA they let my parents and Jonathan out. However, one of the Doctors decided that even though we complied with everything, that she should send DFACS (Department of Families and Child Services) to investigate us for medical neglect. They found nothing, and God blessed us with a social worker who was an advocate rather than an adversary. Our case was closed late last week and now all that’s left is a few more nurse visits that end this week and the hospital should be out of our lives.

This may not sound like something threatening to most people, but I haven’t been into a hospital in about ten years. As a result the sudden decision to go and the intervention following was a bit of a shock.

GenJ Camp was great. My brother and I enjoyed ourselves immensely. Adam B. and Peter S. won the Presidency. The speakers were both excellent and challenging. The downfall was that it was in the mountains in Tennessee, so it was very hard to stay in contact with my parents. That fact aside, GenJ camp was a great experience for both me and my brother.

Finally things are beginning to settle down and get back to normal. Throughout the whole time God has been awesome - providing a place for my siblings to stay, giving them peace, providing baby clothes, everything.

Thank you so much to all who prayed, they really made a difference.
